Michael Halpern is a Principal Scientist in the Health Sciences practice of Exponent, a research, and consulting firm based in Alexandria, VA. Dr. Halpern’s undergraduate training was at Cornell University. He received an M.D. and a Ph.D. in the Medical Scientist Training Program at the University of Michigan. He also received an M.P.H. in Epidemiology at the University of Michigan. Dr. Halpern has extensive experience in medical technology assessment and health services research, specializing in epidemiological, economic, outcomes, and clinical research for drugs, medical devices, and other health care interventions. Work by Dr. Halpern includes: cost-of-illness, cost-effectiveness, and cost-benefit analyses; modeling and computer simulations; analysis of data from Medicare, managed care organizations, national health care surveys, and other sources of medical claims data; meta-analysis; design of clinical study protocols and analysis plans as well as analysis of clinical trial results; workplace-based studies evaluating absenteeism and productivity; and evaluation of factors influencing decision making among physicians, patients, and health care administrators.
Dr. Halpern previously served on the faculty of The University of Michigan School of Public Health, Department of Public Health Policy and Administration. Publications by Dr. Halpern have appeared in JAMA, the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, Clinical Infectious Diseases, American Journal of Managed Care, Quality of Life Research, and Tobacco Control. He is a member of the American College of Preventive Medicine and co-chair of the Evidence and Payer Decision-Making Working Group of the International Society of Pharmacoeconomics and Outcomes Research.
