Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Dean’s Reception?

The Dean’s Reception takes place the day before Tropaia in Dahlgren Quad. It is an opportunity for students, their families, and their friends, to spend time with GPPI faculty and staff. Heavy hors d'oeuvres will be served.

The graduating class photo will be taken just prior to the Dean’s Reception. The picture will be snapped at 6:00 p.m. on the steps of Healy Hall. Please arrive by 5:50 p.m. so that you everyone can be in place at 6:00.

What is “academic regalia” for GPPI students and how much does it cost?
Academic regalia is required for all students who participate in the Graduate School Graduation and GPPI’s Tropaia. Academic regalia for GPPI students is a Masters gowns (with pointy sleeves), a “peacock” colored hood, a mortar board, and a tassel.

Cost break down:

ITEM COST
Gown $38
Hood $45
Mortar Board $9
Tassel $4
Total $96

How do I get my cap and gown?
The Georgetown University Bookstore sells Graduation regalia. They will have a Grad Fair from 9:00 a.m to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 20 and Thursday, March 21. Please try to get your cap and gown then.

You can also get your regalia during the week of Graduation (May 13-16). Additionally, you can order your regalia by phone and it will be shipped to you (there is an additional charge for shipping).  To order regalia by phone please call 1-800-548-5452.  When you call you will need to provide your height and your hood color (peacock for all GPPI graduates).

How do I get to campus on the day of Graduation?
Parking on Georgetown’s campus is always a little difficult and likely to be more so on Graduation Day. So, please try to take the GUTS bus, Metro Bus, the Circulator, or even a cab.  In addition, free parking will be available at the Harris Building (3300 Whitehaven St. NW) and shuttle service to main campus will be provided.

Wheelchairs are available for people with mobility impairments, please email Laura at lam265@georgetown.edu for more information.

What is the difference between the two ceremonies, should I go to both?
The Graduate School Commencement and GPPI’s Tropaia are actually one ceremony and you should attend both parts. Your degree will be conferred at the Graduate School Ceremony which begins at 9:00 a.m. All GPPI students will stand together to accept their degree conferral. Diplomas will be distributed at GPPI’s Tropaia ceremony. Each student will walk across the stage to be recognized. Due to space limitations, students will pick up their diplomas from an adjacent room after the ceremony. The Grad School’s Commencement and GPPI’s Tropaia will each last approximately one hour; you and your guest will have sufficient time to go to both ceremonies, however, there is no time to dawdle in between!

Do I need a ticket for the Grad School’s Commencement or for GPPI’s Tropaia?
Space is limited for GPPI's Tropaia Ceremony and each graduating student will receive FOUR tickets for guests (graduates do not require a ticket).  Tickets will be required for admission to the Leavey Center Ballroom.  Tickets are not required for the Graduate School Commencement ceremony at 9:00 a.m.

When can I pick up my tickets?
Tickets will be available beginning on the evening of Wednesday, April 24 and must be collected by Friday, May 3.  Tickets will be available at the following times:

  • Wednesday, April 24th: 5:30-6:30 p.m., 2nd floor conference room (at the Tropaia Kickoff Event)
  • Thursday, April 25th: 10:45 a.m. - 6:30 p.m., Old North student lounge
  • Monday, April 29th: 11:00 a.m. - 6:30 p.m., Old North student lounge

Outside of those times, tickets can be picked up from Laura's desk on the second floor of Old North.  All students must pick up and sign for their own tickets.  If you need to make alternative arrangements to collect your tickets please email Laura prior to May 3.  All tickets that are not claimed by May 3 will be redistributed in the ticket lottery.

What happens after Tropaia?
After GPPI’s Tropaia please join us on the Leavey Center Esplanade (the roof), for a Champagne Toast. Your diploma will be available for pick up during the Toast.  Please do not leave without your diploma!

Are there other places to get information?
Yes, please check out the Graduate School Commencement website and the Main Campus Commencement page for additional information.
